What to do when death occurs

The first steps to be taken when a death occurs are often the hardest for people to make. At John J. Smith Family Funeral Service we have experienced local staff on call at all times

  • To answer the telephone personally,
  • To attend to moving a deceased person from the place at which they have died

Our advice to all families, is that when a death does occur they contact us immediately.

Bringing your loved ones into our care

We can arrange for the person who has died to be brought home or to be taken into our care and are on hand to provide support and help throughout this difficult time.

Letting People Know

When looking at the best way to let friends and family know, there are two aspects to bear in mind:

  • The emotional upset and grief of telling people and coping with their reactions to the news
  • The practical difficulties of getting in touch with what may be a large group of people

The thought of passing on the news of a death may be daunting and overwhelming, even more so where there are a lot of people to tell fairly quickly.

  • Some people may be told face-to face, for example friends, family and neighbours living close by. Other may have to be told with a phone-call, if living further away or even abroad.
  • If you have a large family or wide circle of friends, some of the responsibility for passing on the news to those close to you may be delegated to children or other family members.
  • In terms of wording it is best to keep the message clear and simple
  • In terms of dealing with peoples reactions, you face the challenge of dealing with the grief of others as well as your own feelings. Be prepared for the fact that people may not respond in the way you might expect, they may be embarrassed or say something awkward.

We are on hand and also offer a trained Grief Support Advisor for support should you require.

Registering A Death

Our advice to all families is that when a death occurs they contact us immediately. In many cases now when people pass away in hospital, it is not necessary for us to attend immediately, however our staff can give the helpful advice needed to put people’s minds at ease, and to ensure that the family are aware of everything which is needed to be done. Our main telephone number is 01206 761800 and all area office numbers are manned by local experienced funeral staff at all times night and day.

One part of the ‘funeral process’ that your funeral director will not be able to do for you is to register the death. This needs to be completed by the legally responsible person, normally a relative or executor, someone present at the death, the occupier of the premises where the death occurred, or the person arranging for the funeral.
